How Liz Wilcox Built a $500K Membership, Acquired Smart Passive Income, and Survived Survivor — All on Her Own Terms
By Dustin Heiner | Master Passive Income Show
What happens when a mom living in an RV decides to start an online business with zero experience — and ends up buying one of the most iconic brands in the online business world? That’s exactly the story of Liz Wilcox.
I recently sat down with Liz on the Master Passive Income Show for one of the most wide-ranging and inspiring conversations I’ve had on the podcast. We covered everything from her humble beginnings as a travel blogger, to building a $500K-per-year email marketing membership, to acquiring Pat Flynn’s Smart Passive Income — and yes, we even got into her wild experience on the television show Survivor.
If you’re someone who wants to build a business that works for you instead of the other way around, this conversation is packed with gold. Here’s the full breakdown.
From Broke in an RV to Online Entrepreneur
Liz’s story starts in the most relatable way possible: she was broke, had a young child, and her husband was serving in the military. Living in an RV and feeling financially constrained, she noticed other people were earning money online and figured she’d give it a shot. She launched an RV travel blog, created digital products, and started building an email list.
At the time, she was learning from entrepreneurs like Pat Flynn — the same guy whose podcast, Smart Passive Income, inspired me to start my own online journey years ago. Working in the small windows of time she had around family responsibilities, Liz proved that the strategies being taught by people like Pat actually worked.
The key insight that changed everything for her? Email marketing. She realized that email could be organized into automated systems — sequences, funnels, and workflows that kept running even when she stepped away. That’s the real meaning of passive income: building systems that enable transactions to happen when you’re not actively working.

Selling the Blog and Starting Fresh
As her email systems and digital products gained traction, something interesting happened. Liz stopped publishing blog posts regularly — and people started asking what she was doing instead. She had a realization: the travel blog was an asset, not a lifetime commitment. She could sell it and move on.
In March 2020, right as COVID-19 shutdowns were beginning, Liz sold the blog. She used the proceeds to fund her next venture for roughly a year. That next venture? Teaching email marketing — the exact skill that had allowed her to build and sell the travel blog in the first place.
The $9 Membership That Earns Half a Million Dollars a Year
Liz’s email marketing business is built on a brilliantly simple model: a $9-per-month membership. Members receive weekly email templates along with video explanations showing how to adapt each template to their own businesses. That’s it. No complex funnels. No high-ticket upsells. Just a low-cost, high-value offering that solves a real problem for small business owners who know they should be sending emails but don’t know what to say.
Today, that membership generates approximately $500,000 per year.
What I found even more impressive is how Liz runs it. After the membership had been operating for about two years, she started recycling her email templates. She hasn’t written a single new template since 2024. Instead, she reviews older templates, removes dated references, and makes small improvements to keep them relevant. Her sister works full-time in the business, organizing the template library, flagging potential repetition, and removing content after two years so subscribers don’t see the same material twice.
Liz’s philosophy is that members don’t need an ever-expanding content library. In fact, she argues the opposite: 104 solid templates are more than enough. A bloated archive would just lead people to spend their time browsing instead of actually sending emails. This is a masterclass in treating digital content as a maintainable business asset rather than a never-ending content treadmill.
The result? Liz was working just a few hours a day, four days a week, for about 120 days a year — and taking more than 200 days off.
Acquiring Smart Passive Income
With her membership humming along and two houses already purchased, Liz made a move that stunned the online business world: in 2025, she acquired SmartPassiveIncome.com and all of its related business assets from Pat Flynn.
For me, this was deeply personal. I discovered Pat Flynn’s podcast around 2013 or 2014, and it played a huge role in inspiring me to start podcasting and building online businesses. I even sent Pat a handwritten letter and a small check just to say thank you — and I’d never even bought one of his courses. Liz connected that story to the concept of “superfans” — audience members who become so deeply engaged that they share your content and support you because they’ve received genuine value.
The transition from Pat to Liz was carefully orchestrated over six months to protect the relationship with the audience. Rather than announcing a sudden change, Pat gradually introduced Liz: first as a guest, then through short “Ask Liz” episodes, and eventually as co-host before the acquisition was officially announced. Liz compared the process to a gradual sunrise — the audience got comfortable with her before she took full ownership.
The approach worked. While some subscribers naturally moved on, many others welcomed the fresh perspective and noticed positive changes in the brand right away.
The Hard Parts Nobody Talks About
Liz was refreshingly honest about the difficult side of the acquisition. She had to let two team members go, and the company’s CEO had already planned to resign. These were emotionally challenging decisions that affected real people and created uncertainty for the remaining team.
To maintain confidence during the transition, she and Pat went on a podcast tour after the announcement, appearing on 10 to 15 shows. The planning and coordination alone was a massive time investment.
And then there’s the personal cost. Liz has two children, including a teenager she adopted. During the summer of the transition, she spent about ten weeks away from them while she immersed herself in learning the business and supporting the team. Her message to listeners was clear: don’t assume that success is effortless. Major business decisions come with real sacrifices, especially for families.
Life After the RV: Real Estate and Family
We briefly touched on Liz’s transition from RV living to homeownership. She left the lifestyle partly because her daughter had grown tired of it, and after separating from her husband during the pandemic, she bought a house for herself and later purchased a second property where her former husband now lives as a tenant. It’s an arrangement that works well for everyone, and she hopes to return to RV travel after her daughter graduates — maybe seven years from now.
Survivor: The Applebee’s Moment and Playing With Integrity
No conversation with Liz Wilcox would be complete without talking about Survivor. She made it to the Final Four — the last contestant eliminated before the final three faced the jury.
I had to ask about that moment: when another contestant, Q, won an Applebee’s reward and didn’t pick her. The clip went viral. Liz explained that the show was physically brutal. She was severely hungry and, because of allergies, couldn’t eat many of the foods available on the island. The disappointment pushed her to a breaking point. She had an emotional reaction, but what happened next is what made viewers love her — she apologized, pulled herself together, and got back in the game. People told her afterward that they appreciated seeing someone express real anger and then recover without holding a grudge.
We also talked about her strategic promise not to vote out Hunter. She had helped eliminate Tevin from a three-person alliance, which left Hunter upset and vulnerable. Knowing that eliminated contestants serve on the jury and ultimately decide the winner, Liz wanted to maintain goodwill. She kept her promise even during a revote, though it complicated her strategy. She came heartbreakingly close to the final — eliminated roughly 12 hours before she would have had the chance to make her case to the jury.
The Future of Online Business: Community, AI, and the Death of the “Course”
The final portion of our conversation dove into where online business is headed, and this is where things got really interesting.
Liz argued that in an era flooded with AI-generated content, people are craving something real. Content that features an actual human being — with personality, opinions, and lived experience — simply feels more compelling. That’s why community-based offerings are thriving. Since taking over Smart Passive Income, Liz has ramped up activity dramatically: the podcast went from one episode a week to three, she’s sending multiple emails per week, and she livestreams three times a week. These changes helped double the membership’s size even before the acquisition was officially announced.
We both agreed that audiences discover you through information, but they stay because of you. In a world where AI can generate a passable answer to almost any question, the value of direct access to a real, experienced practitioner has never been higher.
This led to a conversation about the changing role of online courses. I believe many buyers are tired of the traditional course model. They want a concrete result, coaching, and community — not just a library of videos they’ll never finish. Liz agreed that the “course” label may be losing its appeal, though she pointed out that well-designed training can still work if it promises a clear outcome. She cited a 21-day content challenge she purchased that was essentially a course, but its challenge format and promise of a specific result made it feel entirely different.
I shared that I’ve been building a Master Passive Income app to bring community, training, direct messaging, and AI tools into one place — replacing the scattered mix of Slack, course platforms, and Facebook groups. Liz was enthusiastic about the idea, and she highlighted Smart Passive Income’s new free resource: the Superfans Content Calendar, available at SmartPassiveIncome.com. It lays out an entire year of launches, workshops, email ideas, and social media content to help business owners build a repeatable system.
How to Grow a Podcast (Liz’s Playbook)
Before we wrapped up, I asked Liz for her best podcast growth advice. Her recommendations were practical and actionable: appear as a guest on other podcasts, leverage Pinterest as a search engine that links directly to episodes, give your listeners incentives to share, and publish consistently enough that your show becomes part of their weekly routine.
At Smart Passive Income, the new publishing schedule is an interview episode on Monday, a solo episode on Wednesday, and a shorter episode on Friday. It’s an ambitious cadence — but it’s exactly the kind of consistency that builds an audience over time.
Final Takeaway
If there’s one thread that ran through our entire conversation, it’s this: durable online businesses are built on systems and assets, but sustainable growth comes from personal involvement, clear outcomes, genuine trust, and meaningful community. Liz Wilcox is living proof of that — and she’s just getting started.
